On December 31, 2022, I made a new year's resolution to run a 5K once a month. That very next day, I dusted off my running shoes and ran my first race. I felt great. In my head, I was saying I can definitely do this. A month later, I quit. Shortly thereafter, I received a text message from a family member asking me to run in the Chicago Marathon for charity. Wait, what! I said 5K - not 42K. I hesitated - but then text back "sure why not?" After all it was for a good cause, I'd be running to raise funds for Strides for Peace, a nonprofit organization that works with other community
organizations who are on the frontlines
trying to prevent gun violence.
I climbed stairs. I got up at 5AM to run. I went to the gym. I joined social media groups for marathon runners. I bought new running shoes and then I ran, I walked, I jogged. I signed up for races all across the suburbs and in Chicago. To date, I have completed a whopping nine 5K races with just three more left to achieve my new years resolution. But first, I'm gearing up for the biggest race of my life - the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, a 26.2 mile race. Then, following that race, I will have three more
On Sunday, October 8th, I have one goal - finish the race. Will I finish first, absolutely not. Will I finish last, umm who knows. What I do know is that it will be my personal best. In my mind, making it this far has shown me that
I have already won the race .
